Choosing the Right Entertainment Center

When it comes to choosing an entertainment center, it’s important to first examine what objects will be placed within it. The most important is the television, as the depth and width of the television will affect the size of the entertainment center. Make sure that the television fits in its slot, and that it isn’t so deep that it will need to be pulled out from the wall to fit. It is a good idea to have a little room in back for cords and wires as well. Make sure to look at the amount of shelves the entertainment center features, and think about what objects will be placed on those shelves. Whether it’s a full DVD collection, or a range of electronics like Blu-Ray players, stereo receivers, speakers, or gaming consoles, it’s important to ensure that the entertainment center provides enough storage. Make sure that the appliances can connect to the television with ease, and that the cords will stretch without becoming taut.

Choose an entertainment center that complements the aesthetic of the home; for example, a more traditional home would have a rustic entertainment center. It’s also important to measure the area where the entertainment center will be placed in advance, as these dimensions are quite important for selection.

Creating a Southwest Style Bedroom

When it comes to decorating the bedroom, there are hundreds if not thousands of unique themes to choose from. But one of the most fun and simplest to implement themes is based around the style of the Southwest. The well known Southwest style incorporates elements like hand woven rugs, rustic bedroom furniture, and rich colors like orange, red, and turquoise. These elements give a Southwest style bedroom a unique appeal, and make it a retreat for all of those desiring a colorful and fun bedroom atmosphere.

With all interior decorating, it’s best to start with the paint, which will involve removing the furniture. Choose a rich background for the walls; a color like crimson or burnt orange can make an excellent background. Next, think about what kind of rustic bedroom furniture would work best, whether it’s a light or dark finish, and what unique elements of style will diversify the furniture. Once this is completed, address the accessories. Consider lamp shades and window treatments that will soften and diffuse the light in colors that provide a contrast from the walls. Don’t be afraid to put a few hand woven rugs on the walls, and incorporate pictures and art that represent the Southwest.

Indoor Spaces for Entertaining

When it comes to entertaining guests indoors, there are two essential spaces that it’s important for the owner of the home to address; living room and dining room.  These are the two spaces where most of the activity will occur.  For the living room, be sure to have ample seating and also lots of objects that can spur conversation.  Just be careful not to have too much in the living room, after all, conversation should be the focus, not all of the accessories in the room or the color of the walls.  For the dining room, again it’s important to have ample seating, and because of the layout of most dining rooms, this will involve having a slew of rustic dining room chairs.  When purchasing a dining room table, it’s also best to go for a table that has several leafs with the ability to seat people ranging from four to fourteen.

Lighting is another important factor of indoor spaces for entertaining.  Be sure to incorporate soft lights like lamps and sconces as well as have a bright overhead light for events like cards, tabletop games, or reading.

Beautiful Covered Patio for Summer

Let’s face it, everyone would love to have a beautiful backyard patio where they can enjoy a peaceful respite from the stresses of everyday life.  But designing a backyard patio, not to mention paying for all the furniture and renovations, can seem like quite a chore.  However, with some smart buying and a little bit of innovation, everyone can have a beautiful covered backyard patio for the summer.  The first step to owning a warm and inviting backyard patio is to decide on a layout.  For example, people who love to barbeque should have a gas grill accompanied by a picnic table and rustic benches, while those more desiring sunbathing and conversation might be happier with a few Adirondack chairs and a standard umbrella.  The layout is your choice, but remember to have the basics covered including seating, shade, and a surface for food and drinks.

While rain might not be common for most people in the summer, it is possible, and in those circumstances it’s important to ensure that outdoor furniture is waterproof or covered.  Wooden furniture that isn’t waterproofed will become soggy and start to rot, and metal furniture can develop unsightly rust deposits and also begin to corrode.

Home of the Bull

There is something unquestionably beautiful about Mexico. Each year, I travel there with my husband and we spend two weeks at our favorite resort soaking up the sun and drinking margaritas. The resort we stay in is called Casa Del Toro. The town is known for their annual bull-fighting event, hence the resort being named “Home of the Bull.” We always stay in the same room at the resort and we are never ceased to be impressed by the beauty of the rustic Mexican pine furniture in the room.

We love the rough, hand-carved look of the furniture and we’ve even modeled the décor in our own home after that of the resort. The rustic pine furniture created an old-fashioned look in our home and we’ve had many friends and family offer us compliments. Many people want to decorate their homes with an old-fashioned look, but don’t like the kitschy look of traditional country-style décor. A rustic Mexican style may be just what they’re looking for.

Getting the Family Together

There’s nothing like spending the weekend relaxing and watching movies with the family. The television is a central item in your home that works to bring your family together. Though some people may argue against it, there is no better way to gather you entire family into one place, then to plan a movie night. The first thing you’ll need to do is make sure you have a good TV set-up. Make sure to have your television on a rustic TV stand and a few chairs and pillow scattered around the room.

Your kids may even want to grab their sleeping bags and camp out in the floor. In addition to a good TV set-up and comfy seating, you’ll want to prepare some snacks. Popcorn is always a good choice and candy and cookies never fail either. Next, just sit back and relax with your family and enjoy the movie!

Creating the Appalachian Living Room

I have always had fond memories of sharing summers with my uncle at his cabin in the Appalachian Mountains.  When I chose furniture for my living room, I wanted it just like uncle Tristan’s cabin.  I decided to go with rustic living room furniture, which created that old fashioned appeal with traditional accents.  I also utilized the space on the walls for pictures of the Appalachian Mountains including meadows, forests, and alpine lakes.  In the end, I think my rustic living room turned out great.

Years after I first designed my living room, Uncle Tristan came to visit, and even he said it felt like home.  I think decorating any room in the house with a particular environment in mind is a great idea.  With a home environment that reminds you of another place, you can find it easier to put yourself in a different state of mind.

The Ideal Entertainment Console

I tried for months to find an entertainment console for my master bedroom, and was never quite satisfied.  I tried several of the large armoire style entertainment centers, which I would return after a week or two.  Then I found a little rustic console table online, and because of the size, I was skeptical that it would work.  Even though the little rustic console table was simple in design, it wound up being perfect for my needs.  I placed the TV on top of the table, and then used the leg shelf to hold my Blu-Ray DVD player.

The table was just the right height as it was just a little taller than the mattress on my bed.  I often found myself falling asleep to a good movie and waking up and turning on the news.  While console tables might be intended for use in small spaces or to compliment other pieces of furniture, with the shallow depth of most modern televisions, they also work great as television stands!

rustic pine armoireThere’s nothing better than creating a bedroom environment that allows you to rest more peacefully.  Your bedroom should be a soothing place where you can fall asleep in warmth and comfort, and also relax your stresses away.  Rustic furniture is a great idea for creating an inviting atmosphere in your bedroom.  The classic rustic bed is reminiscent of a time when life was simpler, while a rustic pine armoire is a great place to store your clothing, accessories, and even shoes.

It’s also a good idea to paint your room in a soothing color.  Avoid bold colors like purple, blue, or yellow, and consider the softness of taupe.  Painting your room in a softer color will help you to relax.  It’s also a good idea to incorporate those objects you find relaxing in your room.  Whether that be lamps, artwork, sculptures, or even electronics, customizing your bedroom to suit your individual needs is the key to happiness.

rustic wood furniture

The dining room is one of the most important places in the home; it’s where the family gathers to share a meal and often one of the few moments of togetherness throughout the day.  It’s important to make your dining room into a space that your family can enjoy, but also a space that defines your individual tastes.  The most important part of the dining room is the table.  Whether an elegant table with ornate wood carvings, or a practical table designed to endure spills, choose a table that suits your needs.

You should also have a theme for your dining room.  If you’re more of a traditionalist, consider more rustic wood furniture.  With a rustic dining room table and a set of chairs, you’re sure to create that unique appeal of the Old West.  If you consider yourself more contemporary, a glass table with wrought iron legs might be in your best interest.  Just remember that it’s YOUR dining room, so let your sense of style shine through!
